Here are a couple of photos - one of the real thing and one of my model recreation.

The occasion? It is August 1980 - Cathay Pacific's inaugural L-1011 Tristar service to Perth. The fire trucks had been out to spray a watery salute. All the ground staff were watching this new bird taxy past for departure.

By that time certain changes had occurred which I haven't incorporated in my model (new pathway through the lawn; covered walkway instead of the wire fence) but I thought I'd have a go at recreating the scene in 1/400th scale anyway. A backdrop would help but that's another project yet to finish.

I just had a bright idea!

Why not use Photoshop to clone the background from the original photograph onto my model photograph?

I must admit I am no expert at Photoshop but with my limited knowledge I managed to produce this result. Much more convincing!

    Gavin,
Awesome work mate. The real thing never looked as good.
Your diorama is definitely the best model airport I have ever seen.
With you now using photoshop, your photos look simply amazing.

It surprises me that you haven't been commissioned by any 1:400 sugar daddy's to build their ultimate diorama.
I don't think you will have long to wait though.

I haven't seen anyone else in this hobby demonstrate your level of skill and craftsmanship.

After earning such high praise here, I will have to finish this model off to a high standard to justify such comments.

    Still to do -

    "Lift-off" components:
1980's extensions to the main terminal building
1980's domestic departure lounges built over the lawns
    1980's surface movement control tower

    Also:
Suitably painted backdrop for better photographs
    Ramp lighting masts
Finish off yellow taxyway lines on apron
    Stairs to observation decks
1/400 swans for the ornamental lake in the courtyard!!!

Modelling work comes to a standstill when my real job gets busy.

I don't accept paid modelling work because, truth is, it just isn't worth it for the time and effort involved (I can earn 10 times as much in my business as a licensed finance broker, so modelling is strictly for R & R).

Star visitor to the old Perth Terminal was definitely the British Airways Concorde.

She made two visits (on charters), the first as a "red tail" in February 1985 and then in my favorite scheme (Landor) in June 1986.

G-BOAB flew so fast across the Indian Ocean from Colombo that she had to fly up and down the coast of Western Australia in the pre-dawn darkness waiting for first light and the lifting of curfew to land at Perth Airport! I wonder how much that little scenic detour cost BA?

My first GJ Concorde arrived today. A sweet little model that brings back fond memories of the day we all got up early to see Concorde arrive at our humble little airport.

I thought when I looked at the photo, "I need another two dozen boxes of little plastic people to correctly represent the crowd that was there that day". In fact, they roped off areas of the airside lawns and allowed the public a closer look.

My favourite memories of Perth Airport are from the 60s and 70s when 707s were the "giant airliners" of the day. Here are three of my favourites being turned around on a busy day (for Perth!).
