Yours is a wonderful thread Gavin, quite inspirational and just plain fascinating. I never cease to be amazed by your passion for perfection and your remarkable modelling skills. By the way, I LOVE the F28. Well done on hitting the 1,000 mark.

Thanks for your words of encouragement guys. It has been a pleasure sharing with you. I might have to prepare a light weight mini version of Perth so I can enjoy my models in the caravan.

    I absolutely need those Ansett's

Gavin - your airport has inspired so many to follow suit and inspired me to have a crack at planning for my retro Sydney airport.

Thanks for sharing this project - assembled or disassembled its a fantastic effort.

Thanks to all of you for your kind words.

I will have to let little Perth live on for a while from my photo archives.

Here is a quick snap I took from my recent bunch of arrivals before packing my airport away. I've been waiting for this Ansett-ANA F-27 for a while - Pam from JetCollector has been holding it for me until I had enough models to ship together. Seen here posed with my MMA custom.

Thanks Dean. Here is that same photo from my archives. Brings back fond memories of warm summer afternoons I spent in that courtyard and on the observation deck in the background watching Ansett-ANA and TAA 721s come and go.

Just reminds me, I never did get around to making the rock walls for the swan pool enclosure on my diorama - too focused on the airside!

Hiya Frank. Welcome to the forum. You have obviously started at the very beginning of this very long thread.

A few years ago I experimented with the idea of representing "open" passenger and cargo doors by applying flat black tape to the side of the fuselage. The doors were created out of white electrical tape which I curled to give them a curved shape and stuck to the fuselage with a tiny sliver of Scotch clear magic tape. Below are some close ups which show the procedure, warts and all. (it looked convincing from a distance, haha)

The idea was that I could remove the tape with no harm inflicted on the model.

I went a bit crazy with the idea and turned my diorama into a cargo ramp to display all the types I had modified.

Brilliant as ever Gavin. I note all your photos just show the port side of the aircraft. I presume you didn't apply cheatlines and blanked-in windows to the cargo doors on each aircraft, as none show the other side of the cargo doors?
Will we ever see this superb model out again with new pics?
    Adrian

The missing B.707s still needed to be done: Uganda Airlines, Air Zimbabwe (rainbow scheme), Air Niugini. TMA of Lebanon (with correct Lemon colour tail)

DC-8s still needed to be done: UAT, Iberia ('80s scheme), Air Ceylon, Surinam Airways, Air Spain, Seaboard World (-63)

1/400 scale new mould wish list ; Tupolev Tu-114, Tu-134, Antonov An-12, An-24, Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.31, Armstrong-Whitworth Argosy, Airspeed Ambassador, Avro York

    Adrian,

Yes, I eventually realised if I could print decals I could also print the artwork onto glossy photo quality card then cut out the passenger doors, cargo doors with cheatlines, etc and use those instead of tape.

Example here. I printed the inside of the cargo door as well and stuck the two halves together. Can't find a photo from the other side right now.

My airport is in storage at the moment. It will definitely be reassembled one day.

Great Scott! I had the same idea of creating such an adhesive open door solution. In fact commercialize it and have sets on sale for different air raft types in dozens per package.
Never got around to making it:(
Nice to see it looks so great!!!
