The Real Deal

This aircraft (I-DEMS) was part of a 5 plane order placed by Alitalia in September 1979. It was delivered to the airline in February 1983. It wore the Bvlgari color scheme from 1998 to 2000 and flew with the airline until 2002 where it now sits in storage at Marana - Pinal Airpark in Arizona

The Pros

Unlike the competing release of this model which was made by Dragon Wings, this model is all metal and all-in-all the mould is well made. The livery has been executed well, with the Bvlgari watch reproduced flawlessly. The rest of the livery has also been printed well and a nice gloss finish has also been applied to the model. Passenger and cockpit windows are framed and positioned correctly. Standard details such as cargo doors, no step markings on the wings and reg numbers on the nose gear doors, wings and fuselage are all apparent. Alitalia titles have also been added to only three engines - exactly like the real version. The landing gears also have improved tires (compared to the  )The engine pylons are also better than the 747-200 counterpart made by Gemini Jets. This model also has a seamless rear section where the horizontal stabilizers are attached unlike Gemini's older 747's.

The Cons

The wings are all metal and thin, but they lack the antennas at the edge of them, and they also seem to have an inaccurate wing-root as well. As mentioned above, the landing gears tires have been improved, but the gears itself don't have as much detail as other releases (like the NWA 747) they do however look exactly like Gemini's gear. There are also two (minor) printing issues; namely the black dot on the tip of the nose is not apparent, and the the European Union Flag is a little off place. But other than these small problems, this model has been well executed.

Final Thoughts

This is an excellent release for either those who missed out on the Dragon Wings version, or those who simply prefer to collect all-metal models.
