Having got rid of the planes, cruise missile launchers replaced them. Having got rid of them and closed some of the bases there's now only North and South Korea, Iran, Pakistan, India, Russia, China, USA etc..etc.....ad nauseam. But yes those planes looked good.
This is what the fuss is all about. Maybe the diecast manufacturers could make something like this!

Thanks for the info. Only 14 produced, only 11 flew for the Air Force...a very rare bird. Now none exist. Always learning something new on these forums, it's what keeps me coming back...

I do have dim memories of watching B-47s trailing their chutes, when out on a family picnic, whilst inbound to one of these bases. However, I was lucky enough to get up close to the last B-47 in the UK at Upper Heyford in '67.
I'll bet there was a lot of fun going on around your home town when the GLCM's arrived at Greenham Common....

My concerns were because I was at college in East Anglia and we had Lakenheath, Europe's biggest USAF base, and Mildenhall among others. There were often reports locally that something nuclear had leaked or that because a base had spy planes it would become a target. The odd crash or fuel leaks were also a worry. So watch out. Today the sole remaining base used to store US nuclear weapons is RAF Lakenheath. Here are a few pics of what the bases are or were used for. the U.S. military's policy is to neither confirm nor deny the presence of nuclear weapons in most accidents.

Despite claims that the U.S. nuclear stockpile is safe and reliable, the number of accidents involving America's atomic arsenal is a matter of concern.

Great thread Sal, and everyone. I, too, would spend my summer days "spotting" all the vapor trails in the S.F. south bay area. Absolutely great memories.

What a thread. Fantastic. To go back to page one and those "ripples", these sseem to be a characteristic of Boeing aircraft as i have worked on many 757s and Boeing 737-800s with these ripples on the skin, but it doesnt seem to affect the structural integrity.
Still love to see those Buffs smoking!

Your absolutely right!!

I would spend my summer vacations on my back on the lawn just looking at the contrails all day long.

After a while I got smart and got my fathers binoculars so I identify those little F-102's and F-86's or whatever zig zagging back and forth behind those bombers as they practiced attacking them!!

Sal, you got any shots of your B-57 squadron, or B-57s in general? I just bought a 1/72 Canberra with the off-center fighter-style cockpit, and it is really a nice model. I've always liked the B-57 design, especially with the B-47 style tandem cockpit.
